The plant-based movement is growing: here’s why that’s a good thing!

Veganism is quickly becoming a very popular lifestyle, not just in, Australia, but all over the world. More and more people are choosing to either partially or completely eliminate animal products from their diets, for a variety of reasons. This might be by becoming fully vegan, compromising with a vegetarian diet or simply having a few plant-based meals each week.

The benefits of this are undeniable. On a large-scale, the plant-based revolution has the potential to significantly reduce our carbon footprint by eliminating the need for animal-based foods, helping us conserve the planet we all share in the process.

We know this because of a 2018 study by Oxford University that completed the world’s most comprehensive analysis of farming’s effect on our environment. It concluded that a vegan diet is the “single biggest way” a person can do to reduce their impact on the planet. With this understanding, it’s no surprise people have been more motivated to change their eating habits.

But veganism has also been linked to a variety of health benefits, offering even more motivation to join the movement.

Benefits of going vegan:

  1. Veganism helps to eliminate animal cruelty and suffering. By eliminating animal-based foods from our diet we are taking a stand against the unethical practices of large factory farms that keep animals in inhumane conditions.
  1. As we mentioned earlier, veganism is better for the environment! With a full-time or part-time vegan diet, you can significantly reduce your environmental footprint. A vegan lifestyle requires far fewer resources and energy than animal-based products, making it a sustainable choice for those concerned about the planet we all share.
  1. Veganism has been linked to numerous health benefits, such as weight loss, improved kidney function, lower risk of heart disease and many others. There’s even been a steady growth in the number of professional athletes  adopting a diet that’s primarily based on plants.

With these benefits in mind, would you incorporate veganism into your diet?

Starting your plant-based journey

Starting a plant-based journey can seem a bit overwhelming at first, but with the right knowledge and understanding of sustainable plant-based nutrition, it can be an incredibly rewarding and enriching experience.

Personally, my plant-based journey started slowly with lots of research into nutrition. By reading blogs, joining online forums, and following plant-based communities on social media you can start to understand what type of plant-based diet is right for you and gain the confidence to start making the change.

One of the most exciting parts of going plant-based can be that it gives you extra motivation to try new recipes and experiment with different ingredients. Through this process you can learn what works best for your lifestyle. Personally, I’m a big fan of a gradual transition in which you slowly introduce new dishes or products into your diet until the step to a completely plant-based diet feels much less daunting. However, I do know people who prefer to go cold turkey and make the switch overnight, and if this is what works best for you, kudos!

It’s important to remember that the key to a successful plant-based journey is consistency. Ensuring you have a variety of dishes that keep you excited and give you all the nutrients you need will help you stay healthy, energised and motivated to continue.
