Vegan vs Plant-Based what is the difference

In short; a plant-based diet is a diet where foods are derived from plants. Including; vegetables, grains, nuts, seeds, legumes, and fruits; with no animal source foods. Being plant-based typically refers to your diet is a diet based on plants alone.

Being Vegan is more than just a diet. It is a way of life that seeks to avoid all forms of animal exploitation, as far as is possible and practicable. This includes not only what we eat, but also what we wear, what we use, and where we go.

A vegan diet is 100% plant-based, meaning that it excludes all foods that come from animals, such as meat, dairy, eggs, and honey. Vegans also avoid using animal products in their clothing, personal care products, and household goods.

In some cases, a food may be considered plant-based but not vegan. For example, some coconut milk producers in Thailand use monkeys to harvest coconuts, chaining them with metal collars and forcing them to climb up trees to collect coconuts. As animals are exploited in the process, the product, while plant-based, would not be considered vegan.

The goal of veganism is to minimize harm to animals. By living a vegan lifestyle, we can reduce our impact on the environment and help to create a more compassionate world for all. Read our blog on this subject

How to start a vegan diet

To create a shift in habits to eat less meat and more plant-based foods, you need to have a healthy motivation to start with your plant-based journey. This motivation can vary from person to person, but it could be anything from wanting to live a healthier life to environmental benefits or animal welfare. A (part-time) vegan diet tackles all 3 motivations.

The key to making any lasting habit change in regards your plant-based journey is to start small and be consistent.

For example, if you’re used to having beef as your main protein source, try swapping it out every other day with plant-based alternatives like: lentils, beans, or tofu. Peanut butter is also a rich source of protein, so you could try adding that to your diet as well.

Other small changes you could make that help you to consumer more plant-based foods include ordering a soy latte instead of your usual cow’s milk latte, or using nuttelex instead of regular butter.

Making small, incremental changes can help you feel more comfortable and positive about your plant-based journey. As you make these changes, you’ll notice that your animal intake will reduce quite quickly. And if you ever feel overwhelmed, remember that any progress is progress, no matter how small. What are the Benefits of a Vegan diet

Benefits of starting with a vegan diet are plentiful.

Increased intake of fruits and vegetables: Vegan diets typically include a higher volume of fruits and vegetables, which are packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fibre.

These nutrients can have a range of positive effects on the body and mind, including improved heart health, reduced risk of cancer, and improved cognitive function.

Inspiration for creativity: Vegan diets can inspire cooks to get creative in the kitchen. When typical ingredients are no longer an option, individuals have to try out new food types and flavours to create new, exciting plant-based meals. This can be a fun and rewarding way to explore different cuisines and cultures.

Environmental benefits: Vegan diets have a number of environmental benefits. Plant-based ingredients require less land and water to produce than meat or dairy products, meaning less greenhouse gases are emitted. A vegan diet can help to reduce our impact on the planet and protect our natural resources.

A meal-kit service like VegMeUp can be a great way to start your plant-based journey. It will allow you to easily explore the rich world of plant-based foods. Read our article about 6 benefits of using a plant-based meal-kit service to learn more.

Is a plant-based diet healthy?

In recent years, plant-based diets have been viewed as the healthiest approach to eating. With most taking up this eating strategy to shred a few extra unwanted kilograms, plant-based diets have gained a lot of attention.

What most people don’t know about vegan diets is that they offer a variety of other health benefits as well. These benefits include reducing the risk of developing serious health conditions like heart disease and diabetes.

The key in following a plant-based diet or any diet is diversity! 30 different plants on a weekly base are the recommended amount to make sure you get all the nutrition’s from plants in your body that you need.

Here are some tips for creating a healthy vegan diet:

  • Variety is key. Make sure to include a variety of plant-based foods in your diet to ensure that you are getting all the nutrients you need.
  • Choose whole foods over processed foods. Whole foods are packed with nutrients and fibre, while processed foods are often high in unhealthy fats, sugar, and salt.

With good planning, a vegan diet can be a healthy and delicious way to eat all of that whilst you make a positive environmental impact to the world.

Iron on a Vegan diet

Around 5% of Australians have an iron deficiency this means that the stores of iron in your body are too low. We all need iron. Plant-based diet or not. Our body uses it to create red blood cells, breaking down food for energy, protecting your body from infection and maintaining healthy muscles and organs.

There are two types of iron:

Heme iron (found in animal products) tend to be easier absorbed by the body however it has also an increased risk of cancer.

Non heme iron (found in plants) is a little less easily absorbed by the body but still contains more than sufficient amounts of iron.

If you follow a plant-based diet, or are considering cutting back on your meat intake it is good to know that enough iron can be found in plant-based foods.

Some plant-based products high in iron are: beans, legumes, leafy dark green vegetables, nuts and seeds, dried fruit and tofu.

Protein on a Vegan diet

For your piece of mind, protein deficiencies among vegetarians, vegans and people on a plant-based diet are far from being the norm. 99% of Australians get enough protein through the food they eat.

Protein has multiple functions and is essential in a healthy diet. Some of the bodily processes it is used for are: building and repairing muscle tissues, maintaining a healthy immune system, making enzymes and hormones and transporting nutrition’s.

The recipes in our meal-kits are designed that you will always find some meals with a higher amounts of protein. It is always a good idea when you are following an vegan or plant-based diet to keep an extra eye out for your protein intake.

Vegan vs Vegetarian what is the difference

Sometimes people are confused by the difference between a vegan diet and a vegetarian diet. There is a significant difference that distinguish the two.

Vegetarian: Is someone who does not eat any meat, poultry, fish, shellfish or by-products of animal slaughter but might consume dairy, eggs or honey.

Vegan: Being Vegan is not only about your diet, it is going beyond. A vegan diet involves eating only foods that are derived from plants. Being vegan generally is defined as living in a way that avoids consuming, using, or exploiting animals as much as realistically possible. While this leaves room for individual preferences and barriers, the overall intent is that minimal harm is done to animals through life choices

Remember, veganism isn’t just about what you’re giving up

It’s about embracing a lifestyle that is kinder to our bodies and our planet. And with our meal-kit delivery service, it’s never been easier or more delicious to make that switch.

So, Geelong, are you ready to join the vegan revolution? Say goodbye to meal prep stress and hello to a world of flavourful, nutritious, and eco-friendly dining. Try our vegan meal-kit delivery service today and taste the difference for yourself!
